The National Sea Grant Law Center is excited to welcome Summer Research Associate Savannah Schiebel, a graduate student at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. Savannah will be working with NSGLC to complete her thesis research, focusing on aquaculture policy and marine mammal interactions.
1. Where are you from?
I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland. While I have spent the last 5 years in Miami, Florida for school, my family has recently relocated to a lake in South Carolina, where I will be moving this summer.
2. What was your first job?
I grew up riding horses, so my first ever job was working as a stable helper taking care of the horses.
3. Who inspires you?
I am inspired by Elle Woods from the movie Legally Blonde. Though a fictional character, Elle’s confident and driven personality led her to become successful in a challenging academic environment despite what anybody thought about her.
4. What made you consider a career in policy?
Although my studies have been focused on marine biology and conservation, I became interested in pursuing a career in policy in order to actively work on the protections that support conservation practices.
5. What are you most excited about doing this summer?
As my background is mostly in science, I am excited to learn more about the policy side of marine conservation, and how to translate scientific findings for a legal audience.
6. Where’s your favorite beach?
My favorite beach is Biscayne Dog Friendly Beach, which is just down the road from the University of Miami’s marine science campus. I love being able to see dogs running around in the water and the Miami skyline just beyond the causeway.
7. What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy reading, spending time outside, and playing with my cat.
8. Do you have any hidden talents? What are they?
I would consider my ability to finish a novel in one day a talent.
