Meet our new Ocean and Coastal Law Fellow, Amy Kraitchman! We asked Amy several questions to get to know her better.
1. Where are you from?
I'm from Oakland, California.
2. What was your first job?
My first job was a summer camp counselor, teaching kids how to kayak and paddle board on the San Francisco Bay.
3. Who inspires you?
Currently, the person who inspires me the most is my best friend. Watching her pursue a career she is passionate about and become a better advocate for herself, and her employees, definitely inspires me to become the best attorney and advocate that I can be.
4. What made you consider a career in law?
I originally thought I wanted to go into marine biology, but when I got to Oregon State University, I found that I was much more interested in the policy side of things. When I began to seriously consider law school, I knew I wanted to use my legal education to become an advocate both for the environment and for the frontline communities that live near our natural resources, but who often do not have a say in how these resources are used.
5. What are you most excited about doing in your fellowship?
I’m really excited to learn as much as I can from NSGLC and their partners! I really hope I can contribute to some meaningful work and that I can expand my legal knowledge and skills as I begin my legal career.
6. Where’s your favorite beach? OR What is your favorite beach memory?
If I had to pick just one beach, I would say Santa Cruz Beach right next to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California. Growing up my family would take day trips down there to enjoy the ocean, sea life, and rides at the boardwalk. We once saw a baby harbor seal playing in the waves!
7. What do you do in your free time?
When i’m not reading or enjoying reality TV, I love to be outdoors or practice yoga.
8. Do you have any hidden talents? What are they?
Since this past summer, I’ve been teaching myself how to crochet. I wouldn’t say I’m the best, but I’m really enjoying learning and (trying) to make things.
