Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court continue to shape the field of environmental law, often with significant implications for the management of ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes resources. In this webinar, the National Sea Grant Law Center’s staff attorneys will discuss opinions issued in select cases from the Court’s 2025-2026 term and their relevance for Sea Grant work. Cases covered will include rulings on whether federal law preempts certain pesticide label-based failure to warn claims and the appropriate court forum (state vs federal) for lawsuits over coastal erosion in Louisiana and the Line 5 pipeline in Michigan. We’ll also revisit some major opinions from previous terms to see how the legal and regulatory system is responding and take a look at cases working their way up through the appellate courts. The webinar will conclude with a preview of the Court’s 2026-2027 term. The Law Center has applied to the Mississippi Commission on Continuing Legal Education for approval of this course for 1 hour of CLE credit.

The permitting process for offshore aquaculture projects in federal waters is complex. Multiple federal agencies play a role, and permit requirements vary depending on the type and location of the operation. In addition, policy changes and litigation can create uncertainty and cause confusion. In this webinar, the National Sea Grant Law Center reviewed recent legal and regulatory developments related to offshore aquaculture permitting, including the current status of Nationwide Permit 55 for seaweed, the sunsetting of Nationwide Permit 56 for finfish aquaculture, and lawsuits challenging permitted projects.
