  • In 2024, the National Sea Grant Law Center and research partners at Florida State University received funding from Builders Initiative to organize a series of workshops for state and federal aquaculture managers to identify policy best practices for a sustainable industry. As part of this workshop series, the team is also conducting law and policy research to develop resources and tools to support the adoption of best practices as desired by states. This project builds off of our work on the State Marine Aquaculture Policy Dashboard.

The first workshop in the series, “Exploring Best Practices in State Aquaculture Policy,” was held on March 6, 2025, at Docville Farm in Violet, LA. Twenty-eight participants representing state agencies and Sea Grant programs across the country came together to discuss the current landscape of state aquaculture policy, envision future policy goals, and identify priority areas for future discussion. Workshop facilitation was provided by Chantilly Mediation and Facilitation. A graphic recorder, Leah Silverman from See in Colors, captured key insights and conversations through a series of visual representations.
