Recent research shows that per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are pervasive in the environment. In response, federal and state governments have begun to develop and enact laws and regulations to address PFAS contamination. In particular, states in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain regions have taken regulatory steps concerning PFAS. However, these state regulatory programs are inconsistent. In order to advance regional consensus regarding PFAS regulations in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain regions, the National Sea Grant Law Center has received funding to conduct legal research and outreach to gain a comprehensive understanding of the state of PFAS regulation in the regions. This research will result in a compilation of state laws and regulations addressing PFAS contamination, a comparative analysis of the compiled laws, and a series of case studies exploring discrete policy challenges. In addition, the NSGLC will conduct extensive outreach in partnership with Minnesota Sea Grant and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant to disseminate research findings and lay the foundation for future regional policy conversations.
